V.C. Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial - Fromelles
One hundred metres from Memorial Park and its tribute to the courage of the Australian Cobber lies the VC Corner Australian Cemetery which was established after the Armistice of 1918. It consists of two mass graves covered with immaculate lawns and marked with a cross. The graves contain the remains of more than 400 Australian soldiers who were killed in the Battle of Fromelles on 19 July 1916. At the back of the plot stands a memorial which bears the names of the 1,208 Australian soldiers who lost their lives in the offensive but whose graves were never found.
Intended as a diversion for the British offensive on the Somme, the Battle of Fromelles is considered to be 'the worst twenty-four hours in Australian history'. By the close of fighting the Australian Forces had suffered 5,533 casualties in what was their first military action of the Great War on European soil. The ranks of the British Army also suffered more than 1,000 casualties (out of a total of 3,410 soldiers) in this badly-planned offensive.
Identified 94 years after the Battle of Fromelles
On 19 July 2010, ninety-four years after the action at Fromelles, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission inaugurated Pheasant Wood Cemetery, the first of its kind to have been built since the Second World War. It accommodates the remains of 250 Australian and British soldiers who lost their lives in the battle. The remains were recovered from mass graves dug by German soldiers at the edge of nearby Pheasant Wood.
Archaeologists spent four months analysing bones and about 1,300 additional items, such as shoes, lockets, locks of hair and pipes. DNA samples taken from the archaeological remains and more than a 1,000 descendants of the soldiers killed in the area have since identified more than seventy of the unknown soldiers whose names are inscribed on the VC Corner Memorial and they are now buried in individual graves.
