Richebourg War Memorial
Inaugurated in 1923, Richebourg War Memorial is unusual for two reasons: first, it was erected in collaboration between two separate villages, Richebourg-l’Avoué and Richebourg-Saint-Vaast, although they consolidated in 1971; and, second, it shows the recumbent effigy of a soldier in a style similar to that of a medieval tomb, albeit draped in the French national flag.
The statue, sculpted by Charles-Henri Pouquet, seems to run contrary to the patriotic zeal which permeated the many memorials erected throughout post-war France prior to 1930. Of the 36,000 tributes to the 1,400,000 French victims of the Great War, nearly all show inspirational themes such as the resilient warrior facing up to the enemy or female personifications of values such as nation and victory driving the enemy from French soil. Very few show effigies of death.
The recumbent effigy and the Christ of the Trenches.
These monuments should not be considered tombs because they do not contain corpses, instead they record the names of the men of a particular place who went to war and never returned. Often situated at the centre of the town or village, on the main square or next to the council hall, their purpose is to urge futures generations to never forget the sacrifices of their ancestors and the horrors of war.
Near to the memorial, the inhabitants of Richebourg fastened to the parish church a large crucifix which was recovered, pitted with bullet holes, from a local battlefield. Similarly, in nearby Neuve-Chapelle, Portuguese soldiers carried an effigy of Christ with them into their trenches from a monument which was damaged in the fighting. This 'Christ of the Trenches' now stands next to a memorial to the Unknown Soldier in Bathalha Monastery, Portugal.
