Monument to the Sous-Lieutenant Jacques Defrasse - Aix-Noulette
In Aix-Noulette stands a monument which bears the following inscription, 'To the glory of the 158th infantry, the Lorette Regiment. This monument was erected by the survivors of the 158th IR in memory of those who died at Lorette.'
Nearby, a modest sandstone stela reads, 'Here fell in glory, on 26 May 1915, J. R. Léon aged 22 years, second-lieutenant of the 28th infantry regiment, Chevalier of the French Legion of Honour and recipient of the Croix de Guerre with silver-gilt star.' This memorial marks the entrance to a track which leads to a German position known as 'Saules Trench'. A second monument in the form of a pillar stands atop a German blockhouse and bears a Latin Cross on each of its four faces. It is inscribed with the words, 'Here fell, during the attack on Saules Trench on 16 June 1915, Jacques Defrasse, second lieutenant of the 174th infantry at the age of 23 years. In memory of him and the soldiers of the 3rd company of the 174th infantry who died that day for France.
The young heroes killed at Saules Trench
Little is known of these two men except that they were from Paris and that one, Jacques Defrasse, was the son of a relatively well-known architect and the other was a student of law before the war. The parents of the latter, Jean Léon, were responsible for erecting the monument. It was moved from its original position to make way for the motorway. These two heroes were killed in separate attacks (three weeks apart) on the heavily fortified German position known as the Saules Trench, it finally being taken by the French on the night Defrasse died.
The Second Battle of Artois was a particularly bloody encounter with the French Army losing 102,000 men in the fighting, including General Barbot (see Souchez Memorial). Despite French success on Lorette Spur, the Germans retained possession of Vimy Ridge which was a key position for controlling access to Douai Plain and the Pas-de-Calais Coal Basin. The German position finally fell to Canadian Forces two years later in the spring of 1917.
