Monument to the glory of General Barbot’s division - Souchez
With his beret and long-coat and his purposeful stride, there is no doubt that the bronze statue on the Souchez Memorial is the effigy of an infantryman from a mountain regiment. It is General Ernest Barbot, the 'good knight' of the Great War, who was considered to be 'without fear and beyond reproach'. He was fatally wounded on 10th May 1915 at nearby Cabaret Rouge.
Born in Toulouse in 1855, the future general of the French Army initially had a mediocre army career and did not reach the rank of colonel until he was fifty-seven. In 1914 he was more likely to be retired than promoted however the coming war changed all that.
After distinguished service in the Vosges, Barbot arrived in Artois in October 1914 at the head of the 77th Infantry Division. The belligerents had begun their race to the sea and each side was desperate to outflank the other. The German Army was threatening Arras and Barbot's infantry confronted the invaders in the suburbs of the town. It was there that Barbot made his famous vow, 'We shall not retreat while I am alive!' And they did not; in pushing the Germans further north Barbot became known as the 'Saviour of Arras'. The German Army subsequently took up position on the heights of Lorette Spur and Vimy Ridge and invaded the Pas-de-Calais coal basin.
The Good Knight of the Great War
During the Second Battle of Artois, which opened in May 1915, Barbot and his men distinguished themselves at Souchez. But on 10 May the General was fatally wounded. The 77th went on to take Souchez in September but Vimy Ridge and the Douai Plain remained in the hands of the Germans.
The popularity of Ernest Barbot among French soldiers was down to his bravery, his simplicity (he always dressed as a common soldier) and the kindness he showed to his men. His modesty is reflected in the Souchez Memorial which is dedicated to all the Barbot Division and not just its leader.
General Barbot's remains are buried in a common soldier's grave in the French National Cemetery on Lorette Spur.
