Memorial to the 9th Scottish Division and Point-du-Jour Cemetery - Athies
On 9 April 1917, the first day of the Battle of Arras, the soldiers of the 9th Scottish Division liberated the village of Athies. In honour of their sacrifice a memorial was built close to the main road which connects Arras to Douai, in the place known as Point-du-Jour. The memorial is made from blocks of Scottish granite piled up in accordance with the funerary traditions of the Celts. It is a cairn which bears the names of all the battles fought by the Scottish Division during the Great War. The monument is encircled by twenty-six stones which represent the units of the division.
Opposite the monument is the Point-du-Jour Military Cemetery. This cemetery was established during the Battle of Arras to accommodate the bodies of the eighty-two soldiers killed in the assault on the German redoubt at Point-du-Jour, close to Athies, which was part of the second line of German defence known as the 'Brown Line'. Some of the graves contain men from the South African Brigade who were also part of the 9th division, nicknamed the division of 'Jocks and Springboks' after their national sobriquet and that of the Scots. The name 'springbok' refers to the South African antelope and 'jock' is a Scottish variant of the name 'Jack'. After the Armistice the British Army concentrated at Point-du-Jour the graves of 650 soldiers originally buried in surrounding village cemeteries.
Point-du-Jour Cemetery where the Grimsby Chums rest in peace with their Scottish and South African comrades.
In 2002, earth-moving works to prepare the foundations of the Actiparc Business Park (on the other side of the main road) uncovered a mass grave containing twenty bodies lying arm in arm. The archaeological department of Arras town council identified them as soldiers from the 10th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment and all from Grimsby. Five of these 'Grimsby Chums' have since been moved to Point-du-Jour Cemetery.
