Le Trou Aid Post Cemetery - Fleurbaix
Le Trou Aid Post Cemetery lies in a small wood of weeping willows in a quiet corner of Fleurbaix, a few hundred metres from Fromelles Australian Memorial Park. A small bridge leads up to the low stone gate which guards the entrance to the graveyard. It is without doubt one of the most beautiful Commonwealth cemeteries in the region.
The cemetery was designed by Sir Herbert Baker, architect of India's Parliament House in Delhi and the Union Building in Pretoria. In the aftermath of the war, the most brilliant of Britain's architects were commissioned to design the Commonwealth war cemeteries in France and Belgium. Baker himself designed several sites including the Neuve Chapelle Indian Memorial in nearby Richebourg, the Delville Wood South African National Memorial in Somme, and the Tyne Cot Cemetery in Passchendaele near Ypres.
One of the most beautiful Commonwealth cemeteries
Le Trou Aid Post Cemetery was opened in September 1914 next to an aid post on the second line of British trenches. Three hundred and fifty-six Commonwealth soldiers were laid to rest there, of which 207 were never identified.
The inscriptions on the headstones bear witness to the long list of military actions carried out in the sector, such as Le Maisnil (October 1914), Aubers (May 1915), Loos-en-Gohelle (September-October 1915) and Fromelles (July 1916). The sector stretched from Armentières to La Bassée and was part of the Forgotten Front which lay outside the main strategic areas around Ypres and in Artois. Although no major operations were ever conducted there before the Spring Offensive of 1918, the British Army carried out numerous small attacks on nearby German positions up to the summer of 1916. None of the attacks made any real impact on the war and thereafter the Allies changed strategy and carried out much larger offensives such as the Battle of the Somme in July 1916.
British positions in the area were manned by troops from India, Canada, Australia, and New-Zealand. It was also there that the Portuguese first saw service, in 1917.
