Grévillers British Cemetery and New Zealand Memorial
The New Zealand Memorial of Grévillers is one of the seven monuments erected across France and Belgium to honour the soldiers of New Zealand who lost their lives on the Western Front but have no known grave. It pays tribute to the effort the New-Zealanders put into the defence of the Bapaume region during the German attack in the spring of 1918 and the part they played in the liberation of the occupied territories from 8 August onwards. In this period the New Zealand Division lost 2,600 men of which 450 have no known grave.
This memorial stands in the Grévillers British Cemetery which was begun by the Australians in 1917 near to an aid post. Today the cemetery is the final resting place for 2,106 soldiers of the Commonwealth who fell on the battlefields in the area. Eighteen French soldiers and seven British airmen killed during the Second World War are also buried there. Many of the soldiers buried in Grévillers during the Great War were declared 'DOD' (Died of Disease) which probably meant that they had fallen victim to the great influenza epidemic of 1918.
War and the great flu pandemic of 1918
The source of the epidemic is unclear but was thought to have made its first appearance in Europe in a British Army camp in early 1918 and, because of the momentous military activity taking place in the first six months of that year, it was initially ignored by Allied Command. With the end of the war came the repatriation of civilians and troops to various parts of the world and this favoured the spread of the disease. Although no cure was ever found for the disease, the epidemic finally petered out in the summer of 1919. In all at least 25 million deaths across the world were attributed to the epidemic making it one of the most devastating outbreaks of disease in human history.
