Gommecourt British Cemetery no.2 - Hébuterne
The victory of the Allied Army on the Marne in September 1914 checked the German advance on Paris and thwarted the Schlieffen Plan. After several attempts to outflank each other in the Race to the Sea, the belligerents moved north. French troops north-west of Bapaume tried to block the German Army from reaching Arras. The Germans took Gommecourt on 5 October but failed to enter Hébuterne and Foncquevillers the following day. Try as they might over the next couple of days, the soldiers of the French 69th Infantry Regiment were unable to retake Gommecourt which the Prussian Guard had heavily fortified with deep trenches, barbed wire entanglements, machine-gun nests and field artillery: the village had become a salient in the Allies' lines.
A tragic day in the history of the British Army
On 1 July 1916 the 46th (North Midland) and the 56th (London) Divisions of the British Army launched an attack on the Gommecourt Salient to divert attention away from the main offensive on the Somme between Serre and Maricourt. The attack on Gommecourt was thwarted in the main by the powerful German defences, especially the barbed-wire entanglements, and resulted in the loss of 7,000 soldiers in one single day for absolutely no gain.
Gommecourt British Cemetery No.2 was begun in 1917 to accommodate 101 soldiers of the 56th (London) Division who fell on 1 July 1916 and was enlarged after the Armistice with graves from the three other British cemeteries in Gommecourt. In total it contains the graves of 1,357 soldiers. Most of the men buried there were killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme which turned out to be one of the most tragic episodes in the history of the British Army; in just one day 21,000 of its soldiers were killed 35,000 wounded and 600 taken prisoner for practically no territorial gain whatsoever.
