Aubers Ridge Blockhouses of the Hindenburg Line
Named by the British after one of the villages on its heights, Aubers Ridge is a modest relief thirty-nine metres above sea level which separates Lys Plain from Deûle Valley and the city of Lille.
The German Army took up position on Aubers Ridge in October 1914 and, for the rest of the war, enjoyed a strategic advantage over the British lines established in the damp alluvial plain of the river Lys below. In the early years of the war the area was the theatre of some particularly costly offensives for the British ranks, such as the Battle of Aubers Ridge in May 1915 and the Battle of Fromelles in July 1916.
The German Army heavily fortified the ridge from one end to the other and incorporated it into the Hindenburg Line. Many of the concrete bunkers and blockhouses they built can still be seen today from the RD 141 road which links Le Maisnil, Fromelles, Aubers and Illies.
The formidable concrete fortifications of Aubers Ridge
Organized into a series of lines, the concrete bunkers were designed for various special tasks to ensure that the German Army would be unassailable during any Allied attack on the ridge. The first line at the foot of the ridge comprised artillery emplacements equipped with embrasures and firing-steps so the Germans could fire directly on any assailants or rake them with enfilade fire. These were coordinated from windowless command bunkers which communicated with the artillery through a series of deep trenches. Observation posts were installed on the ridge and some were even built directly into the fabric of the existing houses, such as the tower in the village of Bouchaine near Illies and the blockhouse on the Aubers to Fromelles road. The opposite side of the slope was equipped with barracks, artillery emplacements and aid posts, such as the hospital bunker in the village of Aventure near Illies.
