Town of Méteren
At the end of the war Méteren was nothing but a field of ruins, even the roads were obliterated. Occupied by the British for much of the war, the village fell into German hands on 9 April 1918 during the fierce fighting of the Battle of the Lys but was retaken by the Allies on 19 July.
By the autumn of 1919 temporary buildings had been put up to accommodate the school, the church and the Town Hall. The local inhabitants were housed in hurriedly-erected shelters with corrugated tin roofs, similar to Nissen huts.
The plan for rebuilding Méteren was drawn up by architect Louis-Marie Cordonnier, who had been given the job of supervising the reconstruction in the Lys Valley. He decided to adhere more or less faithfully to the pre-war layout of the village, grouping the public buildings around the main square. The latter was enlarged after the cemetery was relocated.
The Reconstruction favours the neo-Flemish style
Schools were the first buildings to be opened, on 11 November 1923, and, like the other public buildings in the village, were designed by architect Louis Quételart and his associate André Pavlovsky who had previously designed the neo-Flemish houses in the seaside town of Le Touquet-Paris-Plage.
June 1925 saw the opening of the new Town Hall which, to keep costs down, was conjoined to the Post Office. Quételart and Pavlovsky decided to rebuild the old stone-built hallekerke (church) in brick and give it a much higher bell-tower (51 m). The addition of four bartizans either side of the belfry suggests the architects wanted to give it the appearance of a watchtower surveying the village. The first mass in the new church was celebrated on 19 June 1927 . Méteren had at last risen from its ruins.
Méteren war memorial shows a young woman in Flemish costume kneeling at the grave of a dead soldier. It is the work of sculptor Camille Debert who also made commemorative works in Bergues, Vieux-Berquin and Bailleul.
