Tourcoing War Memorial
At the end of the wide avenue Gambetta, on the road to Roubaix, stands an impressive war memorial to the men of Tourcoing who fell in the First World War. Erected on a square of the same name, the monument to Victory was unveiled in 1931 after twelves years of work. The delay in completing the monument was caused by various political and administrative intrigues. Even after the unveiling, problems in the workmanship were discovered which led some to describe it as a 'broken-down monument'. Designed by Lucien Brasseur, the work shows Victory on a winged horse leading 'the heroes who fell fighting the enemy' to 'glory and immortality'.
The monument is inscribed with the names of the 2,531 soldiers from Tourcoing who were killed in the Great War. Surprisingly it makes no mention of the suffering imposed on the civilian population of the city during the four years of the war. The Germans entered the city on 12 October 1914 and remained there until 17 October 1918. In addition to the usual difficulties related to provisioning, the locals also had to put up with requisitioning. The German invaders went as far as confiscating their beds and the Dean of Saint Christopher's Cathedral was sentenced to ten years in prison for attempting to prevent the occupying forces from seizing the Cathedral's bells which they intended to melt down for bullets!
The suffering of an occupied city on the road 'To Victory'
Like all the towns and cities in the occupied territories, Tourcoing was cut off from the rest of the country and its inhabitants were deprived of news of their loved ones, especially those enlisted in the French Army. To add to their woes, the invaders took hostages to ensure obedience and dozens of civilians were deported to camps in Germany and Lithuania. Also, some 4,176 men and women were rounded up at Easter in 1916 and sent to work in the fields in the region of Ardennes. In all, 177 Tourcoing civilians perished in the occupation and their names can be seen on the war memorial alongside those of the soldiers.
