Steenwerck Church and War Memorial
The British Army, mostly Australians and New Zealanders, defended Steenwerck until the spring of 1918 when the village was taken by the Germans and subsequently all but destroyed. The church, dedicated to John the Baptist, was rebuilt in the Romano-Byzantine style by Lille architect Armand Lemay. The church, with its characteristic white spire, stands opposite a dramatic war memorial showing a French soldier crushed under his fallen comrades, crying out in rage.
On 25 April 2007 (ANZAC Day), a New Zealand delegation came to Steenwerck to formally announce the pardon of soldier John King. A New Zealander of Australian origin enrolled in the 1st Canterbury Regiment, King was shot for desertion on 19 August 1917 at the age of twenty-two years and buried in Trois Arbres Military Cemetery. His execution was kept secret at the time.
A pardon for soldier John King
New Zealand was the first nation to remove the dishonour cast upon those of the Great War who were shot 'to set an example'. When the Pardon for Soldiers of the Great War Act 2000 became law, the New Zealand Parliament declared that their sentences were unfair and today they would have only been considered unfit for military service. Helen Clark, the country's prime minister of the time, declared, 'New Zealand now remembers their service and sacrifice with pride and sorrow whenever New Zealand commemorates those who died in war, and in the service of peace.'
Trois Arbres Cemetery, one of three Commonwealth cemeteries in Steenwerck (the village also has a German military cemetery), accommodates the bodies of 1,704 servicemen including 212 New Zealanders and 470 Australians. In 1970 a group of Australian veterans from the 44th Regiment presented the village with their regiment's flag in recognition of the warm welcome the locals gave them during the Great War.
